Elixir magnesium
Magnesium in our body
There is hardly a mineral which plays such an active role in so many essential cell processes as magnesium. This high-performance mineral regulates muscle and nerve activities in particular – and this simple fact already makes it a vital substance.
Vital functions
In an adult’s body, there are around 25 grams of magnesium. The largest part is stored in the skeleton and contributes to building healthy bones. A further 40 per cent can be found in tissue material. The remainder is contained in extracellular space such as blood, brain fluid, gastrointestinal secretion, gall or saliva. Magnesium plays a major role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats; it is important for more than 300 enzyme reactions and supports cell division. Moreover, it regulates the excitability of muscles and nerves and performs key functions in the cardiovascular system.
Daily requirement
The minimum daily requirement for adults is 300 - 400 mg. Long-term and intensive sport or strenuous physical work can noticeably raise your magnesium requirement since excessive perspiration leads to a higher loss of magnesium. However, other circumstances can also increase the need for magnesium.
All the more important to know your personal daily magnesium requirement.
